| Battle of Brest |
The city of Brest with it's U-Boat pens was of vital importance to the German Atlantic fleet. For 28 days the city was bombed by 705 Allied attack planes and bombers, destroying the once beautiful city with over 360 tons of bombs. On September the 17th and 2nd US Infantry Division moved into the western part of the city, in which the German defenders put up heavy resistance from MG nests and fortified positions. The house to house fighting inside the ruins begun, where any crossing of a street could have deadly consequences.
